What I Get When I Eat Fast Food

I’ve mentioned this a lot in my articles, but my triggers (besides anxiety, depression, stress, and my period) are gluten and sugar. Personally, I usually try to stick to a low carb/keto diet because of this.

My diet doesn't work for everyone with HS

Does keto work for everyone with hidradenitis suppurativa? Heck no. This article definitely isn’t me trying to preach keto to you and I can promise you that. Since I know there are other people out there that are sugar and gluten intolerant too, I thought I’d share what I get to eat if I go out to a fast food joint.

Since gluten and sugar are my main food triggers, when I’m on keto I find myself a lot of the time having tomatoes, nightshades, processed meats, red meat, and dairy, aka things that are common triggers. This is why keto might not be the best option for people with HS and autoimmune issues.

Going out to eat can be stressful with HS

When you’re trying to stick to a certain regimen, going out to eat can sometimes be stressful. Just remember, it’s totally okay to ask for certain adjustments and substitutions regarding your food. Just because you don’t see an option on the menu, doesn’t mean they can’t make an adjustment or substitution for you.

Like I mentioned above, I eat a lot of red meat, processed meat and dairy, so proceed with caution if those affect you. All these options below stay clear of high carbs while also staying clear of gluten and high sugar counts.

Here we go!

Jersey Mike’s

I really love Jersey Mike’s. One of the best things is that they offer every sandwich in a bowl so you can avoid the bread. My favorite thing to get is the chipotle cheesesteak in a bowl. It has steak, peppers, onions, lettuce, american cheese, and a chipotle mayo. A perfect dinner for when I’m on keto or low carb! And very filling!

Wendy’s

Wendy’s is another place that lets you ditch the bun. To fill me up, I like getting a Dave’s double with no ketchup. That’s two beef patties with american cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mayo, and onion. I either ask for no bun, or take the bun off and put the burger in a dish to eat with a fork. It’s so yummy and very low on carbs. This variation of meal is basically my go-to at any burger fast food places like Burger King or McDonalds. And sometimes if I’m feeling fancy, I add bacon.

Taco Bell

Yes, you even have an option at Taco Bell. Angels, rejoice!

I get a Power Bowl with no rice or beans. Basically it’s a salad with your choice of meat and sour cream, cheese, and Taco Bell sauces like creamy jalapeño, chipotle, nacho cheese, avocado ranch, or spicy ranch. All of this is okay if you’re on keto or low carb. I like getting a ground beef Power Bowl with lettuce, sour cream, cheese, and creamy jalapeño sauce.

Chipotle or Moe’s

I get a very similar order to what I get at Taco Bell. I get a burrito bowl with no rice or beans. I mix it up sometimes and either get steak or chicken and then I add sour cream, cheese, pico de gallo salsa, and the red spicy sauce. Basically the same at Moe’s except I get a burrito bowl with no rice or beans, chicken, cheese, cilantro, extra sour cream, and pickled jalapeños.

Chick-Fil-A

Grilled chicken nuggets and a side salad. Put the chicken in the salad and boom! You got yourself a delicious meal. Don’t forget the avocado lime ranch!

See! There are options at fast food places when you’re trying to stay on track! You don’t have to feel left out if your friends want to get something to eat but you have dietary restrictions. There are always options!
