Kashaya

Kashaya

Kashaya is an Ayurvedic health drink that is said to have numerous healing benefits. This potion is generally used as a remedy for treating minor seasonal issues and infections like common cold, sore throat, indigestion, mood swings and so on. It may also contribute to boosting overall immunity. This is easy to prepare and refreshing for the body.

Although there are many versions of this beverage, I usually prepare this concoction for my daughter during the winter months.

Ingredients for kashaya

  • 2 teaspoons coriander seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoons cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 4 black peppercorns
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 3 cloves
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 teaspoon Jaggery
  • 200 ml Water

Directions for kashaya

  1. In a frying pan, dry roast 2 teaspoons coriander seeds, 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds, 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds and 4 black peppercorns.
  2. Add 2 cardamom pods and 3 cloves.
  3. Continue to dry roast on low flame until the spices turn aromatic.
  4. Keep aside and let it cool completely.
  5. Transfer the spices into a blender. Add 1/4 teaspoon turmeric and 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder.
  6. Pulverize them into a fine powder. Do not add water. Store in an airtight container to preserve its nutritional value.
  7. To prepare kashaya, pour 200ml of plain water in a saucepan. Bring it to a boil. Add 2 teaspoons of the prepared kashaya powder.
  8. Add 2 tablespoons jaggery and stir well. Let it boil for about 8 minutes or until all the flavors are absorbed well. I usually boil till the water quantity reduces to one-fourth of its original quantity.
  9. Turn off the flame. Strain the kashaya (if need be) to eliminate particles of spices if there are any.
  10. Consume it while it is still warm.
