Googly eyes and glitter scattered on pink background

Recipe for Art: Googly Eye Coaster

Sometimes during a flare or especially painful lesions, those of us with HS are stuck in a loop of depression and inactivity.

Art helps us to process our feelings and reprogram our brains, and sometimes rediscover our sense of humor. Art is personal, not perfect. Have fun with this project and experiment if you are able to with different materials. You will need some basics for at least one coaster, including a 4” flexible plastic lid from a container, a bottle of clear glue (Elmer’s glue or an equivalent), googly eyes of all sizes, and glitter (optional), all of which can be found at a dollar store.

Taking my mind off the pain

Making a googly eye coaster allows you to focus on the different colors and layout of the eyes, taking your mind off of pain and stress while possibly having a good laugh at the absurdity at making a coaster out of googly eyes.

This is a fairly easy project to put together but it also requires a bit of patience, as the finished project can take up to five days to dry. After everything is positioned in the lid, the glue is poured, and the glitter is sprinkled, set it aside for a day. Check on it and pour more glue into any pockets that look low or bare. It’s not necessary to use more than one bottle of glue to finish your project. You will know it’s ready to pull out of the lid and flip over to finish drying when the edges are completely dry. I tried another medium for a coaster, which you will see in the video. Don’t be afraid to experiment. You should be able to reuse your lid many times. Most importantly, enjoy!
