Relationship Trouble

I’ve been out of work due to my HS flaring up to the point where walking is hard. Now, my boyfriend and I have been together for over a year now, and he has witnessed them get worse and flare up. He has even seen one draining and causing extreme amounts of pain. He is sorry all the time that I’m going through this, but I’ve been out of work over a week now because I have one that has been open for that amount of time.

Now trust me when I say, I want nothing more than to get some sort of income while being out, but my dermatologist has given me no paperwork regarding my issues to give to my job. Which in itself is difficult because I feel like I will be fired soon if I don’t return soon, regardless of how I’m feeling.

The financial issue is huge here because he mentioned he doesn’t want everything falling on him. I don’t want that either. Can anyone help me and give me advice?

  1. Hello . I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling to work due to your HS. You are definitely not alone! In fact, a lot of people with HS end up applying for disability (whether short-term or long-term). You mention not having paperwork from your dermatologist, is this because they refused to give you some? (If so, I would absolutely consider seeking out a different dermatologist who is more understanding and supportive of your situation with HS. There should be something they can give you to share with your work.)

As a first step in managing being off work I would try to reach out to your dermatologist (or a new one) to get some paperwork/note indicating that you cannot work due to your current HS flare. I'm also sharing a link to some information on disability coverage, https://hsdisease.com/resources-disability, as well as this one on applying for social security disability, in case you're interested, https://hsdisease.com/resources-ssdi.

I want to reassure you that you are not alone! Living with a chronic condition like HS definitely can have an impact on one's ability to work. Hopefully some of our other community members here can also share their input and experiences with you, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have other questions, need to vent, or could use some support!

Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
