Side effects from anesthesia from surgery

I had a lower penectomy done this spring to remove abscesses. I was feeling great, healing well for two months and then my bowels and digestive system almost shut down. I was taking 6 Dulcolax pills, plus a daily drink of Miralax, and all it did was give me a lot of gas, bloating and a lot of abdominal pain. I went to the ER twice, and they told me to drink more Miralax. I finally got to see my Endocrinologist after she got back from vacation 2 months later. She Scheduled a colonoscopy and they didn't find anything, but it relieved me from the pain and bloat with the prep. She said having diabetes does make the colon sluggish, and there can be a delay with the side effects of the anesthesia. If it persists, then she will look into IB syndrome with Constipation, but that will be looked at upon our next quarterly check-up. So far, the colonoscopy prep has helped a lot. I was wondering if anyone else had a delayed response to anesthesia like I had.

  1. Oh my goodness, , that sounds incredibly miserable and frustrating! Being backed up is a terrible feeling, and I'm so very glad that the colonoscopy prep helped so much. I personally haven't had experience with anesthesia like this, but hopefully any community members who've had similar experiences can share about it with you here, as I know that many people experience constipation after medical procedures, although your experience sounds like it was quite extreme! It sounds like things are still okay, and you haven't yet noticed it persisting? SEnding you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
