Sticking to Food Requirements

Is anyone trying to stick to food requirements from now through to the new year? What are you doing to make sure you stay on track even if you are going to be a guest at someone else's gathering? (Real) chocolate is my downfall.

  1. I have tried everything. Just as I tried various treatments for HS. Almost every diet I've tried hasn't worked. I've struggled constantly. Fast food is readily available and most times affordable, while healthy foods are often difficult to find and expensive. It seems lately that produce lasts less than it once did.

    1. I 1,000% feel you on this. I am actually in the process of getting diagnosed with my 8th rare disease, and it's all about adipose tissue (fat), and it's absolutely crazy. I actually did all of the work/research myself and am guiding my doctors. But I think you might be interested and maybe can do a little digging yourself if you look up lipedema and lymphedema too. Right now they are listed as rare diseases, but they are actually happening at the rate of about 10-12% of females. The number one thing to keep in mind is that it's not your fault. I have a related disease that is very rare called Dercum's, but what I found out about lipedema/lymphedema was pretty interesting. There are certain Facebook groups I would also recommend too.

  2. I have decided to start a Mediterranean type of diet. I feel it has it’s benefits for someone with HS. Inflammation is cruel and unfortunately processed sugars and certain breads trigger my body in an unfair way. So as of two days ago I have been eating pretty clean and feel great. No bloating and to me that’s a sign that it’s working. Christmas at mother in-laws is going to be challenging but I will do my best. I have decided to bring along paleo friendly desserts just in case for myself and a bag of salad…Lol Good luck to you all. Happy New Year 2022

    1. Best of luck to you and Happy New Year as well! I feel like I'm inflammation times a thousand, and I'm sure you are right on track to feeling and functioning much better. I know paleo is an option too but haven't looked at how different it is to everything else, maybe I will. Thanks so much for sharing!

  3. I totally get this! I feel like everyone is eating all of my favorite trigger foods around the holidays... I have found that the best thing for me is to make my own version of a sweet that I like (just without the triggering ingredients) and bring it to the gathering. Usually, I'll try to make sure that it is a dessert that fits other people's dietary restrictions as well (for example, I try to avoid regular flour and bake with almond flour and coconut flour so my desserts totally work for my cousin who has to eat gluten-free foods). This way, I stay on track and I feel less alone!

    1. I think the hardest part for me is getting the replacement sugars just right. I have been experimenting a lot (have been cooking/baking for 40 years), and the substitutes just do not behave the same way. Thank you for sharing your routine!

  4. The holidays are always the toughest time of the year to stay on point with avoiding those trigger foods. I know how you feel about chocolate. For me, it’s almost anything sweet 😩 the struggle is real!

    1. Someone was sharing those Lindt truffles a few days ago, and I told them if I could fit them up my nose, I would snort them like we used to do with pixie stix, they are so good! Of course, Lindt would never make a sugar-free version. That would be an insult.

    2. 🤣🤣
