HS Treatment + Finding Remission

New here but not new to the HS struggle. I was diagnosed with HS as a teenager but within the past two years (in my 30s with slowing metabolism) my HS has gotten worse (Flare ups that sent me to HR every 3 months). I wanted to share my experience in finding (almost) remission.
I should also state that it is currently mild, however my flare ups were severe.

Diet:
1. I cut out dairy and sugar entirely. This has helped a lot! I noticed many flare ups about 3 days after eating dairy. This makes sense as dairy has a lot of glucose in it and is inflammatory.
Here is a scientific publication that discusses how stopping dairy and brewer's yeast helped 83% of people improve symptoms:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10689602/
It will take time for your body to adjust to no sugar, give it a month and you will stop craving it. I promise!

2. I cut out brewer's yeast. This is in beer and breads. I have switched to alternatives such as ciders and sprouted breads. However, I have reduced alcohol as mixed drinks are usually very sugary. I suggest you find an alcohol you like or if you are in a state where it is legal, try a gummy.
In the same publication from above it discusses how when people refrained from anything containing brewer's yeast their symptoms reduced.
^Chances are whatever your background, you come from a people that did not traditionally eat these things (Native American, African/ Black, Asian) and perhaps your body is struggling to cope with the inflammation they cause (that is not a scientific opinion! Purely an observation + guess)
What is most triggering to me in this category is beer + alcohol. I still eat things like vegan pizza. I mention the background part because perhaps that is a good thing to look into ie what foods may be more triggering to you. ALSO.. I am not a doctor or medical professional, please consult with your doctor and specialist.

3. Get on a Mediterranean Diet

A Specialist:
4. I found a specialist that understands HS. They will usually be a dermatologist. They were willing to work with me by giving me steroid shots at the site of inflammation. And they gave me an antibiotic to have on hand to take when I'm having flare ups.
5. Realizing that the only antibiotic that treats HS well is DOXYCYCLINE MONO 100 MG (1 capsule twice daily). This antibiotic is great because it is anti-inflamatory.

Mental Health:
6. Cut out your stressors as much as possible, stress causes inflamation. Break up with that partner, switch your job, cut out that family member, etc.
7. Find a therapist. There is no shame in addressing your mental health!
8. Find a psychiatrist: Going on Zoloft to treat my anxiety and depression has been a game changer. Dealing with my severe depression and anxiety has been helpful, but also I am generally less stressed and since going on zoloft, I have had less flare ups. This may not apply to you.

Birth Control:
9. There are 3 types of birth control that according to my dermatologist help with HS. They are Beyaz, Yaz, Ortho Tri Cyclin. Please consult with your doctor and gynecologist. I am not a medical professional. This could increase some mood swings/ depression, after getting on Tri Sprintec 28 I increased my zoloft.

SUPPLEMENTS ARE A MUST
10. I researched which supplements would help my body given HS.
Here is a great link with a video from a medical professional on what vitamins to take and what to avoid, yes, some can cause issues
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3FgTAFMMsE

Here is an article about which vitamins are important:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37325281/

11. Realizing that large amounts of vitamin A will trigger HS. Stay away from hair growth and skin beauty supplements, all you need for your hair is something topical and for your skin, an antioxidant.

12. My supplement list:
*Please consult with your doctor
Morning:
Liquid Vitamin B Complex - sublingual 20,000 MCG
Vitamin D (Vegan) (Bone strength plan calcium complex from Naturelo)
Iron Bisglycinate 25 MG
Ultimate Omega Nordic Naturals
A pro biotic (Because digestion)
Resveratrol (Skin antioxidant)

Evening:
Zinc Gluconate 50 mg (it has to be this type of zinc!)
Ashwaganda supplement

13. Biggest herbal game changer:
Realizing that grape seed oil and green tea help address metabolic issues behind HS. Here is an article about that:
https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/15/17/3797

There is a supplement for that.. I recently switched to a resveratrol that contains those herbs:
"Resveratrol 1600mg, Trans-Resveratrol Antioxidant Supplement with Green Tea, Grape Seed Extract and Quercetin, Helps to Support Digestive Health and Immune System, 180 Capsules "
*Please consult with your doctor

14. Lets talk about Coffee
Stop putting sugar in your coffee, switch to honey. Its better for you metabolism. Try an alternative milk!
Also limit your caffeine intake, in the afternoons try a green tea (sugar free)

15.Exercise!
Find an exercise you love and do it frequently! Mine is dancing and aerobics (3-4 times a week)

  1. Been dealing with this for years. Also have dermatology onboard but need to try cutting dairy and sugar. Any suggestions for grocery list and how to shop and plan meals?

    1. what a great question! I hope some of our community members can chime in here with any tips or tricks they have more shopping and meal planning. One of our advocates put together an article with her top favorite substitutions, https://hsdisease.com/living/favorite-substitutes, which might give you a starting point. Aside from the feedback here, meeting with a dietician might be an option for some guidance on dietary changes as well. Please, if you're comfortable, keep us posted with your journey to cutting out dairy and sugar! I hope that you get some relief. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

  3. Thanks for sharing such detailed information on what has helped you manage your HS, ! I really appreciate your effort and input; it could be invaluable for others dealing with this condition.

Of course, we always suggest checking with your doctor before trying any new treatments/supplements/etc, just to keep them informed and maybe get some input. But, ultimately, each individual has the right to seek the treatment options that work best for them.

I like how you have seamlessly combined conventional treatments (steroid injections) and more proactive treatments and changes you can do at home (dietary changes, supplements, etc).

    Thanks again for sharing!

    Best, Erin, Team Member.

    1. *Where I say limit vitamin A I mean limit your Carotene (Specifically), which is found in a lot of hair and skin supplements for women.

Please read our rules before posting.
