A radiating sun

Recipe for Art: Painting the Sun

Sometimes during a hidradenitis suppurativa flare or when lesions are especially painful, we can become stuck in a loop of depression and inactivity. Art can help us process our feelings and reprogram our brains and can sometimes bring a little light to our situations.

Art is personal, not perfect. Have fun with this project and explore all the different symbols you can find for the sun. You will need at least some basics for one sun scene.

Here’s what you will need

  • An 8-inch square of watercolor paper or and 8-inch or 10-inch cardboard round (see the video)
  • At least 4 to 5 watercolors
  • A thin paintbrush and a thick paintbrush
  • Some water

Some of these items can be found at a dollar store, although the cardboard rounds will likely have to be purchased online.

Put HS aside while you get creative

Humans have been fascinated by the sun for thousands of years. We have relied upon it for light and heat. We have relied on it for directions, season and the time of day. Sometimes we are too close to it, and sometimes we aren't close enough.

It was really fun to search for solar symbols for this project and I definitely wasn't disappointed. Hundreds of different objects came to me immediately, and all of them were unique! Give it a try.

Lighten up your life and have fun doing it

Whether you avoid heat because of your HS symptoms, or you work a night job, or you stick to the shade for other reasons, you can make a little sun for yourself and bring some light into your life. This project doesn't require a high skill level.
