any info if personal grooming ( trimming not shaving)helps HS

personal grooming to help with HS

  1. yes I'm on clindamycin. right now I'm being treated by my family Dr.not a dermatologist I also have lymphodema (fluids make my legs swell especially the left leg) so I have skin issues from the waist down. I know they say laser hair removal is the best option but I know my insurance would cover that and heard that personal grooming, trimming not shaving may help.when I asked my Dr o got the just keep it clean and dry and after some research I saw most family DRs will be old school and say clean and dry but a dermatologist would prefer trimming then keeping it natural.im open to anything to help keep thing painless. and its an embarrassing subject to bring up

    1. Hi . Trimming the hair can't hurt anything if you are careful. So it might be worth a try. Have you considered seeing a dermatologist? I know there can be long wait lists for some dermatologists, so it's awesome that your family doctor is treating you now, but maybe you can get that ball rolling. A dermatologist is more likely to be familiar with the newest and most successful treatments. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    2. thanks Lori. yes I've thought of trying to get a dermatologist.i didn't realize the real issue though till a week or so ago. I've been dealing with it since a teenager and the family Dr prescribed a antibiotic gel a few years ago and I guess that's when she diagnosed it and I never knew what I have had a name until I saw my info on my patient site they just got updated. I see her every 3 months and all she would say is how is everything going there, do you need more of your gel.then I read up on it and was like ok that explains a lot.because I had a lot of cyst removed in my life and never was told why I keep getting this, but I'm open to anything that will help and self care there was something that they said most if not all dermatologist would prefer or even make it a part of my HS care.but something so easy as trimming was like how come I ddnt know this years ago, but again thank you for your message having someone who understands to talk to helps

  2. That's a great question, and hopefully some of our community members can chime in. Just to clarify, you're wondering about trimming hair to help manage HS symptoms?

While I don't have personal experience, we do have information about friction and heat and perspiration contributing to HS (https://hsdisease.com/why-bumps-form) so it might make sense that if trimming the hair helps decrease friction or perspiration it might help with symptoms as well.

Are you currently on a treatment for HS? Or finding some things that help you get relief? I'm also sharing a link to some information about treatment options, just in case you're interested, https://hsdisease.com/treatment.

Wishing you a gentle day. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
